Best Value Laundry Detergent: Compare Cost Per Load

The short answer

Divide detergent price by the number of loads you can wash at the dose you actually use. Advertised load counts can assume a particular dose, while pod instructions may call for different counts by load size. Compare similar products and dosing conditions, not liquid volume against pod count.

Calculate cost per labelled load

Price ÷ labelled loads provides a starting estimate. An illustrative $18 bottle labelled for 90 loads costs $0.20 per labelled load. A $20 pack of 100 pods costs $0.20 per pod, but only $0.20 per load when the directions call for one pod for that load.

Read the dose instructions instead of assuming the headline load count describes every wash. If you use two pods, the same 100-pod pack provides 50 such washes, costing $0.40 each. Do not reduce the labelled dose just to make a cost comparison look better.

Why price per ounce is not the whole answer

Two liquid detergents can have different concentrations and recommended doses. A lower price per fluid ounce does not necessarily mean a lower cost for the laundry you wash. Weight ounces, fluid ounces, pods, and loads should not be mixed in one numerical ranking.

For a liquid with volume stated in fluid ounces, divide total volume by the applicable dose in the same unit to estimate washes. This needs dose information; ThriftyRoo cannot infer it just from bottle size.

Understand equivalent and incompatible unit comparisons

Choose value within the products you want to use

Separate pods, powders, and liquids if that makes the comparison easier. Then account for your preferences, machine requirements, and any sensitivity-related product requirements. A price calculation is not a cleaning-performance test.

A large container may offer a lower purchase unit price but also requires storage and a higher upfront spend. Compare the actual purchase conditions: a first subscription price is not necessarily the same price you will pay on later orders.

Compare detergent packs on a common basis

ThriftyRoo puts compatible quantities on a common unit basis so different pack sizes are easier to compare. Other denominators stay in separate groups. Use the product directions to calculate a per-load estimate if that is not the displayed unit.

The example search focuses on laundry detergent pods to make the quantity comparison more direct. If your preferred detergent is liquid, change the query and inspect both the total volume and dose on Amazon.
